T.I. and Tiny Remember Don Cornelius, Address Baby Rumors

Tiny and T.I.

Following the tragic passing of Don Cornelius, the music industry mourned the “Soul Train” creator with heartfelt messages on Twitter. T.I. and his wife Tiny reflected on the 75-year-old’s impact during their visit to “106 & Park.”

“For me, it was about him creating a platform for us to be able to see ourselves,” said Tip. “Every Saturday morning after cartoons went off, I was waiting and hoping Run-DMC or somebody was on there. If not for him, we wouldn’t have had that. And not just my generation, but generations before me.”

Tiny recalled her appearance on the show in the ’90s with her group Xscape. “When I first started out, we were on ‘Soul Train’ and it was a great experience,” she said. “It was the first time I realized that they lip-sync, so it was something different, but I loved it. He paved the way for a lot of us to make it and be seen.”

The couple also addressed rumors that they’re expecting another child. “Ya’ll know I can’t give it away,” said Tiny, before T.I. interrupted to tell them to tune in to their VH1 show, “T.I. and Tiny: The Family Hustle,” to find out.

Ashanti Moves Past ‘Black Cloud,’ Takes Control of Her Career

Ashanti

Blue skies are ahead for Ashanti. After a fallout with her former label Murder Inc., the R&B princess picked up the pieces and launched her own label, Written Entertainment. In an interview with “Access Hollywood Live,” the 31-year-old entertainer spoke about moving past the darker days and taking her career into her own hands.

“The label I was with kinda fell under an indictment and that actually put a hold on everything,” explained Ashanti, who will release her first album since 2008’s The Declaration this year. “It was like a black cloud that I had to kinda come out of and we had to do a lot of damage control. I felt that I wanted to distance myself from that.

“I did Broadway, I did some films, I did John Tucker Must Die, I did Resident Evil. I just had to regroup and say we’re gonna have a fresh start and I’m gonna try to put my business hat on and try to look for a different angle to approach the music. The industry was changing dramatically in those past three years.”

The businesswoman learned some valuable lessons along the way. “Being with the major [label] taught me that I needed a way bigger percentage than what they were giving me,” said Ashanti. “It’s about the profit sharing now and everything is digital and I’m cutting my own deal with iTunes. It’s about learning the behind the scenes to become a better businesswoman.”

Ashanti’s fifth album is due this summer on Written Entertainment/eOne. The first single, “The Woman You Love” featuring Busta Rhymes, is available now on iTunes.

Chris Brown, Snoop Dogg, & Jermaine Dupri Salute Bow Wow on ’106 & Park’

Bow Wow

“106 & Park” dedicated Monday’s show to Mr. “106 & Park” himself, Bow Wow. Some of his peers and friends in the industry including Chris Brown, Snoop Dogg, and Jermaine Dupri took a trip down memory lane with the Cash Money rapper during the episode.

His mentor J.D., who made on on-air appearance, recounted the first time he saw Bow rapping on stage when he was known as Lil Gangsta, and Snoop shared why he gave him his name. “He was named Lil Bow Wow because his spirit was just like mine,” explained Snoop in a videotaped message. “He was like the equivalent of me. I didn’t have no kids at the time, so to me, he embellished everything that I imagined my son would be.”

Chris Brown recalled meeting his BFF on the “Scream” tour six years ago. “[He's] one of the only people I can consider my friend in the industry… He’s a real person,” said Chris. “He deals with day-to-day problems just like me. Me and him have more of an understanding of life from being normal and in the spotlight. We can indentify with having to deal with those types of pressures. I think we gon’ be boys for a long time.”

The man of the hour got plenty of camera time and spoke about his upcoming album Underrated, which features Wiz Khalifa, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Jadakiss, Musiq Soulchild, and Boyz II Men. “I just feel like I’ve accomplished a lot in my career, but still people might overlook it or if they forgot, then I think it’s time for me to remind them of who really was the first person since Kriss Kross to rejuvenize this whole thing.”
