'Straight Outta Compton' Wins Outstanding Motion Picture at NAACP Image Awards

Straight Outta Compton keeps winning. The acclaimed blockbuster about the meteoric rise of N.W.A took home the award for Outstanding Motion Picture at the 47th annual NAACP Image Awards on Friday (Feb. 5).

Director F. Gary Gray and executive producer Ice Cube were on hand to accept the award. “I just want to thank everybody for giving us this award,” said Cube while acknowledging his fellow nominees. “Will [Smith], you’re the man. Beast of No Nation was a great movie. Concussion was a great movie. Creed. So, we’re gonna share this with everybody tonight. We love you. Thank you.”

Ice Cube’s son O’Shea Jackson Jr. also won for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. The young actor played his father in the biopic, which has earned over $200 million at the worldwide box office and become the highest-grossing movie from an African American director ever.

Next up, Straight Outta Compton will compete at the 88th Academy Awards, which are set to take place Feb. 28. Although the film was snubbed in the Best Picture category, it did get nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

Other big winners at the NAACP Image Awards included Pharrell Williams, Queen Latifah, Jill Scott, and John Legend, who was honored with the NAACP President’s Award for his humanitarian efforts. A full list of winners can be found here.
