Mary J. Blige & A$AP Rocky Perform at BET Awards
Mary J. Blige had a message for heartbreakers and the heartbroken during an emotional medley at the 2017 BET Awards on Sunday (June 25).
Kicking off her set with “Set Me Free,” the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul launched into the song that was likely written with her estranged husband Kendu Isaacs in mind. “There’s a special place in hell for you,” she sang. “You gon’ pay for what you did to me.”
But soon, the horns came out and her attitude shifted to self-love on “Love Yourself (Remix).” Joined by A$AP Rocky, a group of musicians, and Black Panther-inspired men, Mary explained the importance of loving oneself through turmoil.
Mary started the night with two nods. She lost the Centric Award to Solange’s “Cranes in the Sky” after being nominated for “Thick of It.” She is also up against Solange, Beyoncé, Kehlani, and Rihanna for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist.
