Philadelphia D.A. Demands Meek Mill Get New Trial

  /  05.22.2019

Meek Mill has scored a legal victory.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner has filed an appeal with the Pennsylvania Superior Court asking for a new trial with a different judge. On Wednesday (May 22), the D.A.’s Office filed documents stating that Philadelphia Common Pleas Judge Genece Brinkley’s “public perception of unfairness and bias” has been evident throughout the trial and that she should recuse herself from the rapper’s probation violation case.

According to NBC10 Philadelphia, the D.A. cites instances where Brinkley overstepped her duties as a judge, including checking up on Mill—whose legal name is Robert Rihmeek Williams—while he was performing court-ordered community service at a homeless shelter.

“Williams should be awarded a post-conviction relief in the form of a new trial,” the appeal said. “In the alternative, his recusal motion should be granted and this matter should be remanded for a violation of probation hearing before a new judge.”

Judge Brinkley found Mill in violation of his 10-year probation and sentenced him to 2 to 4 years in state prison. He served five months before being released in April 2018 while his appeal was pending. Brinkley eventually denied his request for a new trial.

Mill’s team called Wednesday’s appeal a “huge legal victory.”
