Rihanna's 'ANTI' and 'Work' Debut on Billboard Charts

Rihanna is putting in “Work” on the charts. The pop superstar blasts onto Billboard this week with her eighth album ANTI and lead single.

The Drake-assisted song enters at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, with 126,000 downloads sold. As a result, “Work” becomes RiRi’s 27th top 10 hit and 50th Hot 100 entry. She now ties Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, and Elton John for the fifth-most top 10s in the history of the chart, reports Billboard. Meanwhile, Drake earns his 15th top 10 hit with “Work.”

As for the album, the RIAA has certified it platinum after hitting one million downloads. According to TIDAL, which exclusively premiered ANTI, there have been 484,833 paid downloads, in addition to the one million given away as part of the Samsung promotion. The LP was streamed nearly 14 million times through TIDAL.

Billboard figures, however, are less favorable. ANTI debuts at No. 27 on the Billboard 200 albums chart dated Feb. 13, which makes it Rihanna’s lowest opening chart position yet. Beyond this, The New York Times says that less than 1,000 copies of the LP were sold in the U.S. and that the number could be as low as 460.

ANTI’s low first-week sales can be attributed to the fact that it was only available for a portion of the chart week. It’s expected to sell around 125,000-130,000 units in its first full week of availability and that could catapult the effort to No. 1.

If ANTI reaches the top of the Billboard 200 next week, it won’t be Rihanna’s first time in that slot. The singer previously debuted at No. 1 with 2012’s Unapologetic.
