John Legend Performs 'Surefire' on 'The Late Show'

John Legend sparks a “Surefire” on “The Late Show.”

On Tuesday (Apr. 25), the soulful crooner sat behind his piano, belting out the melodic single off his 2016 album, Darkness and Light. Under warm lighting and backed by an orchestral string section, Legend delivered an emotional set.

“I may not know a lot of things but I feel it in my chest,” he sang. “No, I won’t let the blue flame die, we can’t lose hope just yet / It’s once in a lifetime, we’re scared to love, and it’s alright / I may not know a lot of things, but I know that we’re surefire.”

Legend was recently named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People for his musical and social-political impact. During the magazine’s TIME 100 gala on Tuesday (Apr. 25), he expressed himself on the latter when asked about President Donald Trump.

“I think he’s a terrible president,” said Legend. “He’s manifestly unqualified, not curious, not good at legislating or doing anything that the job requires. He doesn’t have any depth about any subject. And he’s also using the office of the presidency as a way to make money for himself with his businesses, so he’s corrupt. I can’t say anything nice about the guy. I think he’s one of the worst people I’ve ever encountered in public life.”

This isn’t the first time Legend has been critical of Trump. In January, he was vocal about this at the Producers Guild of America Awards. “Los Angeles is the home of so many immigrants, so many creative people, so many dreamers, and those of us who work in this business have the privilege of shaping how the rest of the world perceives this country we love,” he said. “We are the voice, we are the face of America. Our America is big, it is free, and it is open to dreamers of all races, all countries, all religions. Our vision of America is directly antithetical to that of President Trump. I want to specifically tonight reject his vision and affirm that America has to be better than that.”
