Wale Debuts Powerful Short Film for 'Sue Me'

Wale flips the script in the provocative and powerful video for his latest single “Sue Me” featuring Kelly Price.

The D.C. rapper teamed up with director Kerby Jean-Raymond, founder of menswear label Pyer Moss, for the seven-minute short film. The thought-provoking clip imagines an alternate reality where the black and white experience are reversed.

Oscar nominee Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea, Honey Boy) plays a struggling white teen, who sees life on the other side for the first time. Instead of Quaker Oats there are Melanin Oats, Jesus is black, and a billboard advertises a dating site called White People Meet. Newspaper headlines read, “Are we ready for a white president?”

Hedges visits Morebucks Coffee before being forcibly removed as Wale films the reversed racial profiling on his phone. The clip concludes with Hedges visiting his father, who is serving prison time for a non-violent drug offense.

“What if you could walk through a day in the life of an average African American young man? What would you see? What would you hear? What would you face?” asked Wale. “We wanted to redefine the whole narrative and allow everybody to step into these shoes. I’ve never been more proud of a video than what we did here. Kerby really brought this vision to life, and Reebok helped make it a reality. I hope it makes you think a little. While you’re thinking, stay safe and stay home!”

“Sue Me” is the opening track off Wale’s sixth studio album Wow… That’s Crazy, which was released in October.
